Since childhood, I’ve experienced the SUPERNATURAL ways God communicates with His children. One of the most POWERFUL ways He speaks to us is through prophetic dreams – those hours when we’re in deep sleep, the Creator of the Universe imparts wisdom, warnings, and wonders directly into minds and our spirits. This isn’t only something that happened in Biblical times – it’s happening TODAY, right now, in these very last of the Last Days, as God is pouring out His Spirit upon all flesh.
Prophetic dreams are not ordinary dreams that come from random thoughts in your mind or processing the day’s events. No, these are DIVINE COMMUNICATIONS straight from the throne room of heaven! In the Bible, we see that prophetic dreams are supernatural experiences where God Himself or His messengers (angels) appear to individuals during sleep to deliver specific messages, warnings, guidance, or revelations about future events.
The Hebrew word for prophetic dreams, “chalom,” appears over 60 times in the Old Testament, showing just how vital this form of divine communication has been throughout God’s relationship with His people. Unlike regular dreams that fade quickly upon waking or seem nonsensical, prophetic dreams carry a weight of spiritual significance that lingers in your spirit. They often come with unusual clarity, supernatural peace, and a sense of God’s Presence that is UNDENIABLE once you’ve experienced it.

Common characteristics of prophetic dreams include vivid imagery that stays with you long after waking, specific details that couldn’t come from your own imagination, scripture confirmations, and sometimes even physical manifestations or sensations that accompany the dream. Many people report waking up from prophetic dreams with their hearts racing, tears flowing, an overwhelming sense of awe, and/or feeling God’s presence in the room.
Throughout scripture, we see God using dreams as a primary way to speak to His people. Let’s look at some of the most powerful examples:
Before Joseph ever became second-in-command in Egypt, God gave him two prophetic dreams showing his family bowing down to him (Genesis 37:5-11). Though these dreams initially caused trouble with his jealous brothers, they were divine foreknowledge of the INCREDIBLE purpose God had for Joseph’s life. Years later, after being sold into slavery and imprisoned, these very dreams would be fulfilled when his family came seeking food during the famine.
What’s fascinating about Joseph’s story is that not only did God speak TO him through dreams, but He later gave Joseph the supernatural ability to INTERPRET dreams for others – a gift that would ultimately save nations and position him for greatness. This pattern shows us that sometimes the prophetic gifts God gives us will be used in ways we never imagined to fulfill purposes far bigger than ourselves!
Daniel’s ability to interpret dreams saved not only his life but the lives of all the wise men in Babylon! When King Nebuchadnezzar had a disturbing dream about a massive statue made of different materials, he demanded his advisors tell him both the dream AND its interpretation—or face execution. Through divine revelation, Daniel described the king’s dream perfectly and explained its meaning about coming kingdoms.
This interpretation was so POWERFUL that Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate before Daniel and acknowledged the supremacy of God! “Truly, your God is the God of gods, the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, since you could reveal this secret” (Daniel 2:47). This shows how God can use dreams and their interpretations to demonstrate His sovereignty even to pagan kings and unbelievers!
In the New Testament, we see God continuing to use dreams, especially around the birth of Christ. Joseph received multiple dream visitations from angels – first to take Mary as his wife despite her pregnancy, then to flee to Egypt to protect baby Jesus from Herod, and finally to return to Israel when it was safe (Matthew 1:20-21, 2:13, 2:19-22).
The Magi also received divine warning in a dream not to return to Herod but to go home another way (Matthew 2:12). These dreams literally protected the Messiah and allowed God’s salvation plan to unfold! I’m reminded of this every time I see how the Lord has protected me or turned around seemingly impossible situations in my own life through supernatural intervention.
God Speaks to Us In Dreams
How do we know when a dream is truly from God and not just our own imagination? This is a question I’ve wrestled with myself, and through decades of experiencing His voice, I’ve learned some vital principles of discernment.
First and foremost, prophetic dreams will ALWAYS align with Scripture. God will never contradict His written Word through a dream. If something in your dream goes against Bible teaching, that’s a clear sign it’s not from God.
Prophetic dreams typically come with unusual clarity and detail. Unlike regular dreams that can be foggy or confusing, divine dreams often have sharp imagery, coherent storylines, and specific details that stay vivid even after waking. They frequently contain symbols that have biblical significance or personal meaning to you.
Another hallmark of genuine prophetic dreams is the PRESENCE of peace, even if the content of the dream includes warnings. There’s a holy weight to these experiences – not a heaviness of fear, but a sense of awe and reverence. You wake up knowing you’ve encountered something beyond the natural realm.
When I receive what I believe is a prophetic dream, I’ve learned to follow these verification steps:
Pray for Discernment and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the true source and meaning.
Search the Scriptures to ensure the message aligns with God’s Word.
Write Down EVERY Detail you can remember immediately upon waking.
Look for Confirmation through other means (Scripture reading, circumstances, godly counsel).
Wait for Fulfillment; True prophetic dreams will eventually unfold in God’s perfect timing.
It’s written in scripture that God seals our instruction in our sleep (Job 33:15), and there are many times throughout the Bible that God visits someone in their dreams, giving them instructions, guidance, or sometimes telling a specific person that He is imparting an anointing upon them, or is going to bless them in some way.
In my own life, I’ve had numerous experiences where God has spoken to me through dreams that later came to pass in EXTRAORDINARY ways. One night, I dreamed about the type of healthy relationship that I had been talking to the Lord about, but had never personally experienced. I told God that because I had not experienced love as it is decribed in the Bible, I kept getting fooled by the counterfiet. Then He gave me three dreams in close succesion about what a godly man really looks like, and what it would feel like to be loved the way God wants His daughters to be loved.
While dreams occur during sleep, visions can happen while we’re fully awake, in a trance-like state, or in that in-between place of dozing or meditation. Both are powerful ways God communicates with His people, and they often work together in our spiritual lives.
In both dreams and visions, God bypasses our natural understanding to speak directly to our spirits. The main difference is our state of consciousness – dreams happen while we sleep, while visions can occur when we’re awake or in a semi-conscience state.
The prophet Joel foretold a time when both would increase: “Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions” ~Joel 2:28.
In these very last of the Last Days, God is pouring out His Spirit in unprecedented ways.
The Lord often uses dreams and visions in tandem for our spiritual development. Sometimes God will plant a seed through a dream, then expand on it through visions, signs or impressions during the coming days, weeks or months, confirming what He showed us during a deep sleep.
