God Speaks To Us In Dreams

Since I was a child I’ve known that the Lord communicates with us in supernatural ways like prophetic dreams and visions, a voice of Spirit, or signs and wonders.

Sometimes He may cause us to see repeated number sequences multiple times in a day, or have an animal, bird or insect show up at a time that has some significance.

If you have not experienced this in your walk with God then my prayer for you is that you do, because God LOVES to WOW us!

My hope is that the Lord begins to talk to you in ways that you can clearly perceive, as He draws you closer to Him than the very air you breathe.

God Speaks to Us In Dreams

Since I was a child I’ve known that God speaks to us in dreams and visions, a voice of Spirit, or signs and wonders.

Sometimes He may cause us to see repeated number sequences multiple times in a day. While other times we may have an animal, bird or insect show up at a time that has some significance.

If you have not experienced this in your walk with God then my prayer is that you do.

My hope is that the Lord begins to talk to you in NEW ways that you can clearly perceive, as He draws you closer to Him than the very air you breathe.

Prophetic Dreams

  • Throughout the Bible God spoke through prophetic dreams to warn someone of something, like when Joseph was told that he needed to flee Egypt to keep Mary and the baby Jesus safe.

  • To tell someone something that He is going to do, like when God came to Abimelech in a prophetic dream to warn him that he was as good as dead, because he was planning to take liberties with another man’s wife.

  • To ask someone something and tell them that He’s going to bestow certain blessings upon them, like when Solomon received a prophetic dream where God asked him what he wanted, and he asked for wisdom.

God Visits Joseph in a Prophetic Dream

After the wise men were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up! Flee to Egypt with the child and his mother,” the angel said. “Stay there until I tell you to return, because Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”

Key Instances Where God Gives Prophetic Dreams

  • Genesis 20:3 ~ God warns Abimelech in a dream to not have relations with Sarah, because she is already married to someone else.
  • Genesis 28:12 ~ Jacob’s Ladder Dream; where Jacob sees angels ascending and descending; which can be seen as a warning in the sense that it highlights the awe-inspiring nature of encountering God directly; while Jacob receives a promise and blessing, the vision of the ladder with angels ascending and descending serves as a reminder of the vast difference between humanity and the divine, implying that approaching God without proper reverence could be dangerous.
  • Genesis 31:10-13 ~ the Angel of God speaks to Jacob in a dream about his flocks.
  • Genesis 37:5-10 ~ Joseph has two dreams that reveal that he will have a position of power and his family will bow to him.
  • Genesis 40:5-19 ~ Joseph, while in prison, interprets the dreams of Pharaoh’s cupbearer and baker.
  • Genesis 41:1-36 ~ Joseph is brought to the palace to interpret the dreams of Pharaoh about the seven plentiful years, followed by seven years of famine.
  • Judges 7:9-15 ~ Here God speaks directly to Gideon, which highlights the personal relationship the Lord has with those He’s called for His purposes. As a confirmation (the Lord will give us confirmations like this, to strengthen us with certainty, when the obstacle in front of us is daunting) God sends Gideon down to the camp with his servant at just the right time to overhear a man telling his friend about a dream, giving him confidence in his victory.
  • 1 Kings 3:5-15 ~ Solomon has a dream where God asks him what he wants, and he asks for wisdom so that he can properly govern His people.
  • Daniel 2:1-45 ~ Daniel interprets the dream of Pharaoh about the giant statue.
  • Matthew 1:20-21 ~ Joseph (father of Jesus, husband to Mary) has a dream where the Angel of the Lord tells him not to worry about taking Mary as his wife because the baby she was carrying was conceived by the Holy Spirit.
  • Matthew 2:12 ~ The Wise Men having been warned in a dream, do not return to Herod but return to their country going a different route.
  • Matthew 2:13 ~ Joseph is warned in a dream to flee to Egypt with his wife Mary and the new born baby Jesus.
  • Matthew 2:19-22 ~ God tells Joseph in a dream to go back to Israel, because all who wanted to hurt Jesus were dead.

What Are Prophetic Dreams?

Prophetic dreams are images, words, messages or encounters that happen when a person is in a dream state. Someone may be given insights into something that is happening currently or in the future. During a Prophetic Dream, a person receives some sort of message in the form of images, impressions or spoken words from God or the spiritual realm while asleep. It can be a warning about something that is unfolding in the present, or a foreshadowing of future events. It can be a full encounter with a spiritual being or God Himself, where some spiritual knowledge, blessing or anointing is being imparted upon the person whom is being visited in the dream.

It is written in scripture that God seals our instruction in our sleep, (Job 33:15) and there are many instances throughout the Bible where God visits someone in their dreams, giving them instructions, guidance, or sometimes telling them them that He is imparting upon them an anointing, or is going to bless them in some specific way.

Does God Still Speak Through Prophetic Dreams?

Yes, He DOES! I can verify, as one who has received these supernatural communications, and subsequently watched in awe as the things I saw in my prophetic dreams unfold right before my eyes, that they do happen. Throughout the decades past, I have on occasion experienced God speaking to me in dreams, but it has been a very rare occurrence.

God Comes to Solomon in a Prophetic Dream

That night the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, “What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!” Solomon replied, “You showed great and faithful love to Your servant my father, David, because he was honest and true and faithful to You. And You have continued to show this great and faithful love to him today by giving him a son to sit on his throne. “Now, O LORD my God, You have made me king instead of my father, David, but I am like a little child who doesn’t know his way around. And here I am in the midst of your own chosen people, a nation so great and numerous they cannot be counted! Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern Your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of Yours?” The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom. So God replied, “Because you have asked for wisdom in governing My people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies—I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have! And I will also give you what you did not ask for—riches and fame! No other king in all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life! And if you follow Me and obey My decrees and My commands as your father, David, did, I will give you a long life.” Then Solomon woke up and realized it had been a dream. He returned to Jerusalem and stood before the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant, where he sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings. Then he invited all his officials to a great banquet.

Prophetic Dreams and Visions

The Lord wants to have a RELATIONSHIP with you, and part of growing that relationship is communication. God speaks to those with a pure heart who come to Him fully surrendered, without an agenda, just seeking the Kingdom of God. Just seeking to KNOW HIM MORE.

In Closing

If you find that there’s something blocking your ability to hear Him clearly, then ask Him to search your heart and mind and remove ANYTHING that is not of Him. Ask God to show you anything He wants you to let go of, and to remove anything that is causing distance between you and Him.

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, Amen!
