Divorce in the Bible

What scripture actually says ~ examined honestly ~ debated reverently ~ and held to the sword of truth, dividing rightly.

Victoria Jemuel       My Line of Thought      Dialectic Reasoning

Few topics in our Christian life will ever be as significant as the subject of what God says about divorce in the Bible. When Believer’s seek to understand the Lord’s will on this, they are usually in the throws of some of their darkest pain. Does God ask that we stay in a marriage that’s toxic or violent? Is He asking that we endure until we are killed, go crazy or succum to some serious health condition due to ongoing stress and trauma at the hands, and diabolical mind of the person that promised to love you? If you do leave is there marriage after divorce? What if your partner leaves you, while you wanted to work through your issues and save the marriage? Are you then condemned to a life alone because God hates divorce?

Today we’re going to:

  • go through scripture and talk about each instance where we find divorce mentioned in the Bible,
  • what the most common beliefs are on this controversial subject, and what verses they lean on in their interpretation,
  • and then I’ll share with you, what I think personally.

After all the facts have been presented to you, I’ll give you my line of thought, and tell you how I got there.

Once we conclude, I hope that you stay to say a prayer, and ask God for a breakthrough in understanding, to supernaturally lead you by the Holy Spirit into all truth.

Believer’s may not always agree, but the Early Church sometime struggled to come into agreement on certain complex matters, so they did exactly what we’re doing here; Dialectic Reasoning.

They engaged in debates, iron sharpening iron, taking time to pray and invite God into the conversation, while working through their differences. They allowed the Spirit of Jesus to guide them, bringing each point that they didn’t agree on, to the sword of truth, dividing rightly.

Does God Hate Divorce?

“For I hate !” says the LORD, the God of Israel. “To divorce your wife is to overwhelm her with cruelty,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. “So guard your heart; do not be unfaithful to your wife.”

This is Malachi 2:16 in the New Living Translation; a scripture verse that often comes to mind when someone is considering whether or not they should go to court and get a divorce certificate, in order to legally sever the relationship. But when we look at the Hebrew word that is translated as “divorce” in some versions of the Bible, and unpack what this word actually means, we can see that this verse is talking about God hating a wife being forsaken, put away or departed from, WITHOUT her receiving the legal document that frees her to remarry.

In these cases she was left out in the world without the protection and provision that should have come from her husband, and yet if she were to remarry another man who wanted to take responsibility for her, it would technically be adultery, because she had not yet been given the certificate of divorce, that would have allowed her to move on.

Leaving a woman in this in-between place, where she is shamed and cast out, without the resources and protection of a wife, but also not free to remarry; this act that was commonly committed by husbands in Biblical times, is what God hates.

Putting Away the Wife, is What God HATES

Scripture Verse About Divorce

“But I tell you that anyone who his wife, except for , makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.” ~Matthew 5:32

Can You Marry a Divorced Woman?

Yes, in the scripture verse above:

  • the word that is translated as “divorces” or “divorced” is the Greek word apoluó meaning to send away, put away, no longer provide for or protect, to forsake (turn your heart away) and purposely break the marriage bond, without giving her a certificate of divorcement.
  • Once the woman has recieved a certificate of divorcement, then she is free to remarry, without it being adultery.
